Karine Rougier

Karine Rougier (born in 1982 in Malta) lives and works in Marseille.

She began her studies at the Arts Décoratifs in Geneva before continuing at the École supérieure d’art in Aix-en-Provence, and has taught at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille since 2018. Her drawings reinvent a natural world in which human and animal forms are intertwined, where bodies and invisible forces come together in a single, spellbinding embrace. Watercolour washes sweep across the forms on paper and, like a receding tide, leave behind only a few details, a few lines for the eye to hold on to. Infused with a powerful life force, her compositions emerge from an unfettered gaze that imbues bodies with desire and potency.

Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions in France and abroad, including at Fondation Thalie (Brussels), Catinca Tabacaru Gallery (New York), Galerie Bertrand Baraudou (Paris) and Espace à Vendre (Nice). She has participated in group exhibitions at Galerie Praz Delavallade (Paris), the Berardo Museum (Lisbon), the Musée d’Art Contemporain (Marseille), Transpalette Centre d’Art (Bourges) and Galerie Martin Kudlek (Cologne). Her works are held in public and private collections, including those of Frac Paca and the City of Marseille. She represented Malta at the Venice Biennale in 2017.
