Cécile Guettier
Biography
Cécile Guettier (born in 1992 in Paris, France) lives and works in Aubervilliers.
A graduate of the school of Beaux-Arts in Nantes, she works across painting and drawing. Discarding all sense of proportion, she embraces exaggerated growth, painting fantastical creatures that seem intent on spilling beyond the confines of canvases too small to contain them. Drawing on the excess, masks and dramaturgy of the grotesque and ancient theatre, she exorcises inner states and questions forms of self-expression within a contemporary world marked by contradictions and violence, both symbolic and real. Mural paintings thus become a site of storytelling, borrowing monsters from fairy tales and reimagining allegorical figures through metamorphosis and distortion.
In 2021, Cécile Guettier was a finalist for the Prix Emerige Révélations and won the Prix de la Villa Noailles. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at galleries and institutions in France and internationally, including Wentrup (Venice), Drawing Lab (Paris), Galerie Chapelle XIV (Paris), Villa Noailles (Toulon) and Galerie Backslash (Paris).
